Getting Started with Dry Needling Treatment for Pain Relief

After checking in at the front desk, the staff will bring you back to our treatment room. Dr. Gepfrey will meet with you and discuss what concerns are to be addressed with dry needling treatment to get pain relief.

  • If the area being treated is in the mid back or shoulder region, you’ll be asked to change into a gown or tank top.

  • If we’re addressing the legs or low back and it is not easily accessible by moving the pant legs or the waist band, you’ll be asked to change into shorts

  • Clients are welcome to bring clothes to change into but we’ll always have you covered!

Application of Dry Needling Treatment

After lying in the most relaxing position for your complaint, Dr. Gepfrey will perform a small evaluation to find the trigger points (or knots) in the muscles. Small acupuncture needles will be inserted into the trigger points.

  • On your first visit, 5-10 needles may be placed in one problem area, but if you’ve been needled before then more needles may be applied. During application most people don’t feel the needles after the initial poke.

  • If for any reason a needle placement is uncomfortable, simply let Dr. Gepfrey know, and the needle will be removed.

  • Once all needles are placed for treatment, they are left in for 15-20 minutes to allow the area time to relax.

  • Removal of the needles after the period is painless and most people report not noticing they’ve been removed.

What Happens After Dry Needling Treatment

After changing back out of your gown or shorts provided, Dr. Gepfrey will discuss what to expect after treatment. This includes:

  • The possibility of soreness in the area treated (typically like working in the yard or going to the gym), tiredness, and potential bruising.

  • These side effects typically last for 24-48 hours and resolve on their own.

  • Patients are encouraged to drink plenty of water the remainder of the day following treatment.

The most common question asked after treatment is “How often should I do this?”. While everyone’s results are different, we’ve had the most success when patients complete 3-4 sessions in a short time period (2-3 weeks). After those first 4 sessions, many people get lasting results and are able to reduce treatment frequency to once per month or as needed.
