Where the Problem Starts for Low Back Pain Fixes

By now everyone finds answers to their problems on social media. Whether you’re learning how to save your dying plants or finding ways to fix your pain, there’s bound to be a video out there to help. The down side of these answers at our fingertips is it may not always give us real expectations of healing.

Most everyone has seen one video of a chiropractor magically curing a patient’s low back pain in a 30-60 clip. Typically the patient in these videos is a young, athletic, and able bodied individual who will create the loudest, exciting pops and cracks to bring views. After receiving an adjustment these patients will hop off the table talking about how much better they feel in one visit. Seems like a magical treatment right?

Here’s Where Social Media Gets Back Pain Wrong:

Reality Check #1: Complex Cases of Low Back Pain

Many of the patients we see in clinical practice come in with several issues at once (low back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, etc). 8 times out of 10 these issues have been present for months and years and just now looking for treatment. Typically people with low back pain often have a variety of factors contributing to the pain- degeneration, repetitive motions at work, and/or chronic disease.

Reality Check #2: Age and Degeneration

While these videos usually feature young women in their early 20s, many of the patients we see in practice range from 30-60 years old. This means there is more likely some degeneration or arthritis in their joints that we don’t see in younger spines making benefits of treatment take longer to achieve.

Reality Check #3: Comprehensive Care

Yes, some people may benefit from a quick adjustment but most people will often need additional treatment, i.e massage, dry needling, exercise recommendations. A typical low back injury can expect to take up to 6 sessions of a combination of treatment to see 75%+ improvement.

Let us help bridge the gap between what social media portrays as “normal” for chiropractic care and what really helps.
